Despite the short week in music (due to Teacher's Convention and Grade 1/2 skating), we had some wonderful musical experiences this week. Grade 1/2 classes used picture icons and the words "cat" and "baker" (as inspired by a favourite singing game) to complete rhythm dictations. Students soon recognized that two sounds on the beat corresponded to the word "baker" and one sound on the beat corresponded to the word "cat". After clapping a rhythm, students put the pictures into the appropriate order to match the rhythm. We also discussed the musical names for one sound on the beat ("ta" or quarter note) and for two sounds on the beat ("titi" or eighth notes).
Students in Grades 3/4 completed a music staff review at the board using a Valentine's Day song and began listening and moving to Brahm's Hungarian Dance No. 5, following a story set to the music by "Fun With Composers" author Deborah Ziolkoski. We also had a chance for some individual singing in the singing game Green Fields Roxy. Kindergarten played a Valentines singing game, Love Somebody, which encouraged in-tune singing and steady beat. They also had the opportunity to play shakers along with a rhythmic chant Grandma Moses. They continue to explore music through vocal play and movement.

This week is music Grade 3/4 students shared and performed their rhythm compositions with body percussion and completed a tasty rhythm review in connection with last week's performance of The Doorbell Rang (with activities suggested by Orff teacher Heather Nail) . Students were tasked with listening to a rhythmic recitation of different types of cookies we had brainstormed and matching them with the appropriate rhythms. Needless to say, our mouths were watering by the end of this activity! Grade 1/2 students began learning an instrumental arrangement of "Row, Row, Row Your Boat" and learned about the different types of Orff instruments (not all the instruments are xylophones!). They also explored vocal range through warm-ups, created new lyrics to a rhyming song, and learned a singing game in preparation for new melodic and rhythmic concepts. Kindergarten students continue to explore their voices through vocal play and exploration and to work on matching pitch and developing in-tune singing.
This week in music both the Grade 1/2 and Grade 3/4 classes continued to explore music as a companion to literature by adding instrumental and vocal parts to the children's books Snow by Uri Shulevitz (Grade 1/2) and The Doorbell Rang by Pat Hutchins (Grade 3/4), as arranged by music educator Heather Nail. We discussed the sound, look, and feel of successful playing and singing, focusing on breathing, posture, and basic technique. Grade 3/4 also worked on rhythm compositions based on the poem "Big Bad Billy" by Dennis Lee and Grade 1/2 had a "Percussion Party" celebrating the different types of percussion instruments. The Kindergarten class continues to work on developing a steady beat and in-tune singing through various singing games, vocal play, and action songs.
